ABOUT US

Free Media.
Free Expression.
Free Societies.

DW Akademie is Deutsche Welle’s center for international media development, journalism training and knowledge transfer. Our projects strengthen the human right to freedom of expression and unhindered access to information. DW Akademie empowers people worldwide to make independent decisions based on reliable facts and constructive dialogue.

We believe that independent media and responsible journalism are essential worldwide. Given Germany’s history, we believe that people should be able to freely express their views and have access to independent sources of information. We consider this to be an important prerequisite for peace and democracy. Together with our partners, we play a leading role in the development of free media systems, creating access to information, setting standards for education and independent journalism.

DW Akademie in the Middle East/North Africa

Three forces are shaping media development in the Arab world: political power, economic interests and the digital revolution. Politicians and businesses have a monopoly on the first two areas; the digital revolution for its part offers a platform for diversity, creativity and room for freedom. The digital change is motivating young Arabs, and young people matter in a region where half of the population is younger than the age of 25.

In this part of the world as elsewhere, information available on the Internet can be extremely helpful, but it can also be misleading or manipulated. That’s why one of DW Akademie’s key focuses is on teaching people how to be critical when using online media, whether in Tunisian youth centers, Lebanese schools or Jordanian community centers. Another focus is on strengthening services that deliver content for media-critical, confident youths. From Morocco to the Gulf Region, capacity building is an important foundation for independent-thinking journalists.

At DW Akademie, we see our task as building regional management expertise and creating networks using international expertise. We develop concepts together with our regional partners.

DW Akademie in Tunisia

Our work in Tunisia focuses on freedom of opinion and information for those living in rural areas. We offer local radio stations comprehensive consulting, and training for staff members. DW Akademie also supports non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that promote free media and freedom of opinion, good governance and women’s rights. We guide NGOs on how to better respond to the needs of their target audiences and how to professionalize their work.

Al Khatt

Al Khatt is a Tunisian non-profit NGO founded in 2013. It works for freedom of the press and expression and aims to be a laboratory of ideas and a space for reflection on the future of journalism in the Internet age.

Within the organization, Al Khatt conducts a global reflection on both the production of journalistic content and how to spread and share it. Al Khatt is implementing actions aimed at:

  • develop and promote freedom of the press and freedom of expression;
  • work for independent, high-quality information that is useful to the citizen;
  • innovate and reinvent the relationship between information content creators and the citizen;
  • create technological tools for information, citizen participation and access to information;
  • work for media education and training in techniques for the production of information content;
  • advise, support and deliver data management and journalistic work tools to organizations and media in Tunisia and around the world.

Al Khatt strongly believes that the right to free and quality information is a fundamental right of citizens and that action for freedom of the press, freedom of expression and access to information means action to establish a democratic and transparent system in Tunisia.
